Hi,
ANU Wins 2003 Uni Champs!
This is a little strange but here goes...
As you would be aware ANU and Melbourne University drawed at the Unichamps and we thought that Melbourne won under the rules for resolving a draw. Well the rules were a little ambiguous in that they said that ties would be awarded to the team with the most 1sts and if this doesn't resolve the draw most 2nds etc until the draw is resolved. When this was read by myself and Chris Lewin from Melbourne we assumed that this meant the most 1sts in each race and on that basis Melbourne would win. We made this assumption since that is the normal way of resolving ties within fleets racing (of course while each class is a fleet race the overal champion uni is a teams event). Everybody was happy with this result until Australian University Sport audited the regatta including the results. They said that the rules were actually meant to mean that ties are resolved on the most number of overall 1sts, 2nds etc. On this basis ANU and Melbourne were so close that we got the same number of 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. ANU however came 4th in the Tasars and Lasers and Melbourne only came 4th in the Womens Lasers. On that basis ANU is the Champion University!
If anything the fact that we had to count down to 4ths shows how close ANU and Melbourne were. The only real affect this will have is that when the perpetual trophy arrives it will go in the ANU Trophy cabinet next the GYM.
