Hi all,
Intermediate-Advanced Sailing Sessions
Michael Leydon, one of Canberras most experienced sailors and regular competitor at world championship level will be running intermediate to advanced sailing lessons on Tuesday nights from tonight. Basically the deal is that you arrive at the sailing club at 5pm to rig and possibly do some theory. By 6pm boats will be rigged and on the water to participate in the YMCA Sailing Club races. Michael will then follow boats around in a powerboat giving on water coaching.
Sailors who attend will need to be able to rig themselves and get around safely. This means that those on beginners courses are encouraged to attend!
This is an OUTSTANDING opportunity to improve your sailing ability. Opportunities to get advanced coaching from such an experienced sailor are rare and I encourage all club members to turn up! I have no doubt that given a few weeks practice Michael will have you ready for competing at regattas such as batemans bay!
AGM (annual general meeting)
The clubhouse will be open from 5pm for a sailing course. There should be enough boats for non-sailing course people to get a sail if you come down early.
Date: Wednesday 16th March. 8pm (or when the sailing finishes and after the food has been cooked)
Place: Sailing Club
There will be food before, during after the AGM.
Nominations can be made to Grant Warner ( grant.warner at defence.gov.au ) prior to the meeting. If you are interested in particular positions, talk to Grant or the committee person on what it involves and how much time. As with all volunteer positions you will get more out than you put in because of the satisfaction and new skills you will learn from taking a position of responcibility!
What is really needed is some new faces on the committee to replace the many committee members graduating this year so get invovled!
Drinks Sessions!
After weekday sailing course sessions (~8pm) the usual plan is to go for a few frinks at a local bar (often the Canberra Yacht Club). All club members are encouraged to attend because it is an excellent opportunity to meet other club members. If you want to confirm location just ring Michael 0413 461 264, or Garrick 0404 292 691 or the club phone on 6282 5121.
Easter Trip
For those who aren't aware University Championships which was scheduled for easter has been cancelled. If you want to know why it was cancelled you would have to ask Melbourne Uni Sailing Club however I would speculate that they must be scared that we will beat them. I would have though that the Sydney to Hobart would give them ample experience at organising 4 days of sailing and drinking but obviously not!
Anyway, it has been suggested that the sailing club go to the coast (possibly Eden) for 2 days at Easter to make up for the lack of an intervarsity regatta. This would be a VERY INFORMAL trip. If your interested put your name down on the list at a training course session or the AGM. If you can't make any of those RING (not email) me on 0404 292 691.
Tuross Trip 05 (approx 5:30pm Friday 8 - Sunday 10 April)
The plan is to go to the coast for the weekend, camping by the beach. There is always a variety of activities such as sailing, windsurfing, surfing, kayaking, relaxing on the beach and of course a BBQ and beach party! The aim is to have an awesome weekend at the beach and for club members to get to know each other in a relaxing environment! Tuross is the ideal location for all this as we camp next to a surf beach, 5 minutes walk to the village shops and 10 minutes drive from sheltered lakes!
If your interested ring me or email me. If emailing include the following 3 things in the email.
- Your mobile number
- Details of your car (age, model, can it tow)
- Details of your tent (how many people it sleeps)
Membership Renewals & Card Issue
2004 Membership is now expired. You can renew your membership at club events or Training Course sessions. That means Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. Also for those who did not recieve a card because they don't have a valid student card you can collect your card at any of these times.
As usual the club is NOT going to remove old members from the mailing list. Simply follow the link at the bottom of any club emails and it will take you less than a minute to remove yourself.
Lake Wallagoot: weekend of 19-20 March (from Grant)
This is coastal lake, in a national park, about halfway between Merimbula and Tathra on the south cost (just west of Bega). It is about 3 hrs from Canberra via Cooma. There are 4 races over the weekend starting at 11am on the Saturday.
The racing is very relaxed and informal. The lake is about 1.5km in diameter and no more than 2m deep. If you don't want to race but just go sailing come along any way. Accommodation is free and there is no power (no radios or mobile phones).
I am going down along with at least 3 other Canberra sharpie crews. A couple of other YMCA boat come for the fun and one of club members should go home to see mum and dad (who sail at the club)
If you would like to come, please see me (Grant). I may even be able to organise ride on a sharpie for the weekend.
ACT Teams champs: (weekend of 19-20 March).
The club will pay for a team to enter. If somebody wants to organise a team of 6-8 people you will be able to compete. Given that this is run by the YMCA all the organiser would need to do is advertise on the club email list and divide interested persons into teams of 6-8 with a least 3 experienced skippers per team. If you are able to organise this event let me know.
Bateman's Bay Regatta 23-24 April
The traditional end of season regatta for many of the sailors from Canberra and an annual trip for the ANUSC, this is a great weekend of competitive sailing on open water. Put this date in your DIARY now!
