Environmental Biology Seminar Series
When: Wednesday, 2 August 3:30pm, - NOTE THE EARLIER TIME
OR CATCH THIS SEMINAR AT 11am at CSIRO L&W - see below
Where: Robertson Seminar Room
Research School of Biological Sciences
Who: Dr. Kate Holland
CSIRO Land and Water, Urrbrae, SA
Discussing: The Floodplain Risk Methodology (FRM): A rapid
assessment method for assessing salinisation risk and benefits of
improved flooding regime and groundwater management for the
floodplains of the highly regulated lower River Murray, South
Australia.
Synopsis: Dieback of floodplain vegetation, associated with
the salinisation of floodplain soils by groundwater discharge, is a
commonly observed consequence of changes in flooding regimes and
groundwater depths due to regulation of rivers. In this talk, I will
describe the development of the GIS-based Floodplain Risk Methodology
(FRM) and its application to ~100,000 ha of floodplain in the highly
regulated lower River Murray in South Australia.
The FRM was able to separate areas of the floodplain into three
management scenarios where:
1) Salt Interception Schemes (SIS) to control groundwater inflows was required;
2) Protection from future salinisation risks was necessary; and
3) Limited groundwater management options were available
The FRM outputs are informing the development of floodplain
protection, prioritisation and planning processes by the
environmental flows and salinity policy makers in South Australia.
This approach has potential applications in other areas where salt
accumulation from groundwater discharge threatens floodplain
vegetation health.

Abstract: Land use changes such as tree planting have been promoted
as a means of reducing stream salinity. The joint CSIRO-Natural
Heritage Trust project 'Commercial and Environmental Forestry' tested
whether forestry in medium rainfall areas of the Murray-Darling Basin
can help achieve the salinity reduction targets set for the lower
Murray River. We give an overview of the results of this project as
well as recent developments in the salinity debate, and present the
results of field work and modelling to understand how afforestation
changes the processes involved in upland salt mobilisation.
