"WildCountry: A Continent-Wide Vision for Conservation and Stakeholder
Engagement"

A seminar by the The ANU WildCountry Research & Policy Hub
(SRES/College of Science)

Prof Brendan Mackey (Hub Director) & Virginia Young (The Wilderness Society)

Friday 28 July, 4.00 - 5.30 pm

Forestry Lecture Theatre, SRES/Building 48

ABSTRACT:
Biodiversity and natural heritage conservation demands the engagement of
all organisations, communities, governments & individuals with
responsibilities for land stewardship. Cross-tenure & multi-stakeholder
approaches to conservation are needed that build upon & complement the
anchors provided by the existing protected area network. By carrying out
cutting edge scientific research, & integrating new information and
approaches with other knowledge systems, the WildCountry initiative is
developing long-term, "big-picture" conservation plans based on
connections - between species, ecosystems, and people. These
landscape-scale conservation projects involve both protecting the best of
what is left of Australia's natural environment, and restoring important
areas.

The Wilderness Society are the lead proponents of this vision, in
collaboration with the ANU WildCountry Research and Policy Hub, The
WildCountry Science Council (made up of nationally and internationally
eminent scientists including Prof Henry Nix, Prof Michael Soulé & Dr John
Woinarski), State governments, and other non-government organisations.
This seminar presents (1) an introduction to the science being developed
that underpins the WildCountry vision, and (2) WildCountry regional cases
studies that illustrate approaches to stakeholder engagement.

THE ANU WILDCOUNTRY RESEARCH & POLICY HUB is a new academic initiative for
advancing knowledge & innovative approaches to long term & large scale
conservation planning & policy ¬ inclusive of scientific understanding
about key environmental & ecological processes. The Hub is designed to
build upon existing research activities, promote linkages both within
interested areas of ANU & among a growing body of external collaborators,
& facilitate the transfer & application of scientific research &
development outcomes to the community of conservation stakeholders.

All are welcome!
