The Social Construction of Australian Foresters
John Dargavel (Visiting Fellow, SRES)
Abstract

This paper asks whether the manner in which Australian foresters have
been socially constructed, which has been more or less stable over
the last 70-80 years, at a point where some structural change may
occur? Will the familiar model of forestry education adapt, or will a
new model arise?

The historical record provides almost the only possible record of
model change. The paper looks first at the lives of three foresters
in an earlier Australian model: Thomas Bailes, John La Gerche and
Richard Dalrymple Hay. It then looks at three foresters notable in
the formation of the current model: Harold Swain, Charles Lane Poole
and Alfred Lawrence.

The paper raises matters for discussion about the future of
Australian foresters:
    * Will there be foresters?
    * Will they be called foresters?
    * Will they regard themselves as foresters?
    * Will foresters be a single category?
    * Will the higher education model continue?
