Header: Research Fellow or Research Assistant to work on a short term geology project. Immediate start.

The School of Geography at the University of Melbourne is currently seeking a person to work on a short-term project (completed by the end of October 2015) aimed at producing a document to be used by government agencies that advises best practice for the collection and preservation of geotechnical cores for scientific investigation.

The successful applicant will have excellent writing skills and experience with report writing. Experience or knowledge of sedimentary/geological coring (and its uses) will be an advantage. The project will be located in Victoria. You will need to liaise with staff at the University of Melbourne, as well as people in industry and government while developing this report. The aim of the project is to develop protocols of best practice for collecting, handling and preserving geotechnical cores collected by government agencies so as to maximum the scientific potential of the material.

The project specifics will be communicated fully to the successful applicant, but include:
a)      Review current geotechnical investigation methodology and storage;

b)      Provide advice on how current methods and storage of samples can be modified to suit other, parallel investigations - such as geomorphological, cultural heritage etc.;

c) Incorporate feedback from other delivery agents e.g. consultants and drilling contractors on the practicality of implementing the proposed methodology (also considering options for improved communication between organisations who need cores taken, contractors who take cores, and scientists who could use them); and

d) Outline the potential value/ benefits of undertaking the proposed methodology to other scientific specialties.

The successful applicant will be engaged as a research fellow or senior research assistant depending on experience. Remuneration will be negotiated. They can work part-time on the project, but they would have to be ready to begin work at the beginning of September 2015.

If you see yourself in this role please send a short description of your experience and a CV to Michael Fletcher (michael.fletcher at unimelb.edu.au) or Ian Rutherfurd (idruth at unimelb.edu.au)

Cheers,
Michael.
