Project Title: After the crisis: Nation-building challenges in East Timor
Deakin University

Given the substantial commitment of International Stabilisation Force
intervention, nation and state building in East
Timor remains a high priority for Australian policy makers. This project
will examine three key nation-building
agendas in post-crisis East Timor, focusing on the key areas of
decentralisation of state authority, evolving
relationships with traditional authorities, and post-crisis conflict
resolution programs, over the period of 2009-11. In
so doing, the project will contribute to a better understanding of
antecedent factors to state failure, linking directly
with recent Australian government policy concerns over 'fragile states', and
their potential to destabilise the regional
security environment.

Understanding anger and its consequences amongst women in conflict-affected
Leste: Implications for enhancing sustainable development

The University of New South Wales

An Australian national priority goal is to understand our region...(its)
societies, politics and cultures. AusAID
highlights gender within its key theme Investing in People, emphasizing that
'gender equality is integral to growth,
governance and stability'. Australia has made a massive investment in the
stabilization of East Timor and other
post-conflict countries including aid for women's organizations. Yet there
is a notable gap in the empirical base for
designing programs for women. The proposed study focusing on women's anger
has the potential to ground
psychosocial programming for women on a firm empirical base. The results may
be transferable to other
traumatized and disadvantaged communities.
