If you are going for a personal site where you aren't afraid to show an
Australian identity then I suggest you get an id.au domain name.
Dead cheap and available to any Australian
Pricing: http://www.whatsinaname.com.au/
You probably aren't eligible for any other .au domain type
Check: http://www.whatsmyip.com.au/tools/choose2LD.html (disclaimer: mine)
If you don't want to be seen as Australian then there are still lots of
choices - .com, .net, .org, .info...
I do like id.au domain names for personal sites - it really does say
'personal site'

Dunno - read up on it at http://creativecommons.org/ IIRC and see what
suits your preferences on other people republishing your work.

Where are you going to host it?
Hosting in Australia tends to be much dearer (at least twice the price,
easily more) than hosting in the states.
