OpenSuSE Leap (current version is 15.4 with 15.5 in beta testing I think) is also free - see https://www.opensuse.org/ - and it runs on many platforms.  It's fast, it's probably more secure than Windows, and KDE's Plasma user environment can be easily set up to look exactly like the familiar old Windows 95; I'll talk you through it on the 'phone Stephen if you'd like to give it a try on an old system.
