Subject: Grasslands nature walk and restoration events in Nov & Dec

>Dear friends and grasslands afficiandos,

I write with information (below) on a series of grasslands events in the
next six weeks:
- Saturday 21 Nov, 10-12, a nature walk at Stirling Park
- Wednesday 25 Nov, 13:30 - 17:00, hand weeding Old Canberra House
grassland at ANU
- Saturday 5 Dec, 9-4, weeding grassy woodlands at Stirling Park
- Wednesday 16 dec, 13:00 - 17:00, hand weeding Old Canberra House
grassland at ANU Please resister with the people below if you can
participate.

Thank you to the team of ten who helped weed Stirling Park earlier this
month. Another 30 m3 of woody weeds are now woodchips, and we got rid of
a lot of Wild Oats just before it set seed.
Thanks too to the 20 people who helped weed Yarramundi Reach earlier in
September: the dead Chilean Needle Grass now stands out and the
flowering Bulbine Lillies are well worth a look if you are passing by.
Great work!

Best wishes - Jamie

FOG-ANU Fenner School Walk - a stroll through Stirling Ridge (10-12, Sat
21 Nov)

Adam Muyt, has for many years been committed to the preservation and
management of our grassy woodland remnants and is very familiar with
Stirling Ridge, a spectacular woodland site, and home to the endangered
button wrinklewort. Adam will provide a thorough but simple
understanding of the woodlands, the plants, and their best management.
We will meet on Alexandrina Drive across from the Canberra Yacht Club
(car park on Mariner Place ), Yarralumla. This is also by the lake-side
bike track. You should bring appropriate clothing, hats, water and a
sense of fun. To let Adam know that you are coming and to give us a
sense of the numbers, please contact Adam, adam.muyt at yahoo.com.au or 02
6251 2195, after hours.

Native grassland restoration volunteers wanted:
on campus on Weds Nov 25 & Dec 16 pm

Volunteers are wanted to help restore an ecologically significant native
grassland remnant on campus on Wednesday Nov 25th, 1:30 - 17:00 &
Wednesday Dec 16th from 13:00 - 17:00. The work will mostly involve hand
weeding. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of the local
flora. Participation will be limited to 12 volunteers. Please register
with John Fitzgerald on john.fitzgerald at anu.edu.au. Volunteers should
wear sturdy, enclosed footwear and bring a hat and water bottle. The
weeding site in the grasslands can be reached by first heading south
along Liversidge St. Once past all the construction fences near Old
Canberra House (OCH Building 73), turn right / west and walk 100m across
the OCH lawn. Look ahead for the team working on the lands sloping
towards the lake.

FOG-ANU Fenner School Working Bee, Stirling Ridge (9: - 4:00 pm, Sat 5
Dec)

The FOG-Fenner Group is organising its last working bee for 2009 at
Stirling Ridge, which is a spectacular woodland site and home to the
endangered button wrinklewort. The main problems here are woody weeds
(blackberry, Cootamundra wattle and exotic trees) and blue periwinkle.
The FOG-Fenner School Group was established to involve volunteers in
restoring two important ACT grassy ecosystem sites at Stirling Ridge and
Yarramundi Reach, which are managed by the National Capital Authority.
We need volunteers to lead weeding teams, set up monitoring points, run
the registration or barbecue, or just assist in any weeding tasks.
Working bees provide a great opportunity to learn about these sites and
to improve skills and to enjoy good company and food. We will meet
across Alexandrina Drive from the Canberra Yacht Club (car park on
Mariner Place ), Yarralumla. This is also by the lake-side bike track.
Volunteers, please bring old, long sleeved clothing, a water bottle and
sun protection. Barbecue lunch provided.
