Postdoctoral Position in Palaeolimnology

A postdoctoral position is open at New Zealand's National Institute for
Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), for a highly motivated person
interested in palaeolimnology. The position is initially for two years, with
extension possible, though dependent on future funding. NIWA is one of New
Zealand's leading institutions for aquatic research, and sources funding
from competitive sources. The successful applicant will join an
interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating various aspects of New
Zealand's lakes. Initial emphasis will be placed on establishing links
between current lake status and catchment land use, with identification of
potential palaeo-indicators a key component of this work. Subsequently, it
is expected that this information will be used to establish transfer
functions to interpret sediment records of historical conditions in lakes.
Diatoms are expected to be a key component of the sediment transfer
functions. Since the New Zealand aquatic diatom flora is currently in need
of review, we welcome applicants with established skills in diatom taxonomy.

Applicants must have, or be about to complete, a PhD in aquatic ecology (or
similar discipline) and experience conducting research in lake ecosystems.
Those with palaeolimnological expertise are particularly welcome to apply.
Additional requirements include a working knowledge of the taxonomy of
diatoms, knowledge of statistical procedures, particularly multivariate
approaches, and the ability to plan, execute and publish original and
innovative research with minimal supervision. The ability to work in small
teams is essential.

Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their interest in and
qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae including all academic
experience plus employment during the past 5 years, college transcripts, and
names of 3 professional references with their e-mail addresses and phone
number. Send applications to Dr Ian Hawes, National Institute of Marine and
Freshwater Research, P.O. Box 8602, Christchurch, New Zealand, or e-mail
i.hawes at niwa.cri.nz. Seed funding for this position is available now and
review of applications will begin on 1st April 2001 and continue until the
position is filled.
