Dear fellow list members,
I am currently involved in a project which is attempting to use pollen to answer a question about whether a maori archaeological site has also been used for agriculture (maori garden). Pollen is preserved in palaeosoils within the site and may be informative about the local occurrence of agricultural plants. Phytolith analyses may also be of use.
As far as we are aware this is the first time that such a study from an archaeological site has been undertaken in NZ (or indeed in Australasia). We know that pollen from palaeosoils has been analysed from archaeological sites in Europe and wondered if list members are aware of similar studies from within the Australasian/Pacific region. We would welcome information about any similar type of project in the region.
Cheers
Donna
