The UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND advertised the following position  (Position

School of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resources Management

The newly-formed School of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resources 
Management is an interdisciplinary group of about 45 staff who teach and 
undertake research in botany, zoology, earth sciences, ecosystem management 
and environmental engineering. Ecosystem Management, a core discipline in 
the new School, teaches into undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in 
Natural Resources and Environmental Science, and other areas.  The 
Discipline is established in a new building on a rural campus, with close 
access to several thousand hectares of University-managed rural lands.  We 
seek to fill the following academic staff position.

SENIOR LECTURER IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS & REMOTE SENSING (SPATIAL 
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY)

Applications are invited for a tenurable Senior Lecturer (Level C) to be 
responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (both internally 
and externally) in Spatial Information Technology (SIT).  Current SIT units 
offered by the School include Geomatics, Desktop Geographic Information 
Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and GIS in Natural Resources Management, and 
Spatial Analysis with GIS.  Ability to teach concepts and skills in SIT to 
students from a range of awards (mainly environmental science and 
management, but also social sciences, urban and regional planning, 
archaeology, computing science and information technology, rural science 
and agriculture) would be attractive.  The appointee would be expected to 
develop professional short-courses, supervise research by undergraduate and 
postgraduate students, undertake externally-funded research and fulfil 
administrative duties.

Applicants should normally hold a PhD and have developed a career in 
research and/or management in an area relevant to the position.  They 
should have experience of practical applications of SIT to environmental 
science and natural resources management, data-base management and decision 
support systems, and of another relevant speciality such as spatial 
modelling.  Appreciation of the use of GIS and remote sensing in a wide 
variety of disciplines would be advantageous.  Experience of tertiary 
teaching, including the use of innovative, student-centred approaches, is 
also desirable.
