Query re sediment traps

Dear all

The catchment of one of the lakes we have been working on was recently burnt
out.  We are now planning on conducting a sediment trapping program in the
catchment river and in the lake near the mouth of the river in order to
determine the proportion of charcoal to sediments being washed into the
lake.  

Does anyone have any ideas about simple but effective sediment traps that
could be used? A colleague once used filter paper in petri dishes for
collecting fine grained sediments in a stream. Any thoughts?
 If anyone has sediment traps we could borrow or hire please contact me.
