PhD Research Scholarship

Applications are invited for the following postgraduate research 
scholarship tenable at Southern Cross University, School of 
Environmental Science and Management, NSW from 2005.
History of eutrophication of eastern Australian coastal systems using 
a palaeolimnological approach.

The project aims to investigate the history of eutrophication in 
selected coastal systems perhaps including the Great Barrier Reef, 
Moreton Bay, Richmond River or the Sandon River. Palaeolimnological 
approaches including the use of diatoms, foraminifera, heavy metals, 
stable isotopes and radiocarbon dating will be used to reconstruct 
the history of the selected coastal systems. Results of the project 
will contribute to knowledge of the process of eutrophication and the 
management of Australia's coastal ecosystems.

The successful applicant will be based at Southern Cross University, 
Lismore but will be expected to undertake field work in coastal 
systems.  The PhD will work within a multidisciplinary team including 
academic researchers and other postgraduate students,  all working on 
the impact of pollution upon the Australian environment, with a 
special focus on, and industry linkages with, management 
organizations.

Applicants should hold a good honours degree in palaeolimnology, 
coastal management, environmental studies or a related field.

The scholarship pays a tax free stipend of $15 000 pa for 3.5 years. 
With further funding for project operation costs and relocation.
