Dear AQUA members,
Whilst not specifically a Quaternary related position, the following
may interest some of you:
Director
School of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science, University of
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
The University of Auckland seeks applications from suitably qualified
individuals for the position of inaugural Director of the
newly-established School of Geography, Geology and Environmental
Science. The Department of Geology and the School of Geography and
Environmental Science (SGES) provide a comprehensive programme of
research and teaching in human and physical geography, geology and
geophysics, environmental science, and environmental management. In the
latest round of the national Performance Based Research Fund in 2004
the University of Auckland was identified as the leading research
institution in New Zealand. The Department of Geology was the top
ranked department within the Science Faculty. Staff in SGES received
the highest ranking among New Zealand universities in human geography
and contributed to the top ranking given to the University in the
?Earth Sciences? and ?Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour? categories.
Formation of the new School reflects the commitment of the University
to Geography and the Earth and Environmental Sciences. It further
reflects the University?s awareness of the need to better integrate
research and teaching in the human and physical sciences to address
immediate and longer-term national and international objectives for
sustainable development. The new School provides a firm platform for
growth and development in both teaching and research.
The Director of the School will hold discipline-based qualifications at
the PhD level in a relevant academic field and will be appointed at a
Professorial level. An ability to administer academic structures and
direct staff is necessary as is an ability to interact productively
with other units within the University and with external organisations
and government agencies. The appointee will provide leadership, oversee
the design and rationalization of the teaching and administrative
structures of the School and build both the cohort of graduate students
and the research profile of the School. A strong record in teaching,
scholarship and research and the supervision of graduate students is
required. A strong track record in the attraction of external research
grant support is expected. Experience in work requiring a
multidisciplinary approach is desired and sympathy towards and support
for multidisciplinary research is required.
