Dear All (apologies for cross-posting),

I would like to draw to your attention, and invite you to participate in
our session:

‘Tropical climate variability - ENSO and the monsoons from the past to
the present’

at the upcoming XVII INQUA Congress, 28 July – 3 August 2007, Cairns,
Australia.

Abstract deadline: 31 January 2007
Congress website: http://www.inqua2007.net.au/

Session description:

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the monsoon systems are major
components of the Earth's climate system and their variability affects
the lives of millions of people throughout tropical regions. Determining
the nature of the coupled ocean-atmosphere interactions that give rise
to ENSO and the monsoons, the evolution and variability of these
systems, and the potential linkages to high latitude climates at a
variety of timescales, have emerged as key issues in understanding
global climate change.

This session is open to submissions on the spatial and temporal
variability of tropical climate. Topics of interest include the history
of ENSO and ENSO-like variability, Indo-Pacific warm pool dynamics,
Pacific sea surface temperature and salinity gradients, and phenomena
such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Indian Ocean Dipole. We
welcome contributions on monsoon climate variability in marine and
terrestrial settings, from milankovich to decadal scales, in addition to
presentations exploring regional (eg tropics/extra-tropics) and global
(eg mid- to high latitude) teleconnections, feedbacks, and responses to
external forcing. Novel data from natural archives, such as corals,
speleothems, tree rings, sediment cores, pollen, tropical ice cores etc,
as well as modelling studies are particularly encouraged. We also invite
presentations on the social impacts of past tropical climate change.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Best wishes,
Helen McGregor and Quan Hua
