Dear Colleagues,
We’d like to draw your attention to the session entitled ‘Termination II, the Last Interglacial and the Last Glacial inception’ at the XVII INQUA Congress to be held in Cairns later this year (28 July – 3 August 2007). The Last Interglacial was the last time prior to the Holocene that Earth’s temperatures and sea levels were higher than those of the present day. Some have argued that this warm interval may represent an analogue for future climatic conditions as the effects of greenhouse warming unravel over the next couple of centuries. In spite of its potential significance, the questions of when the Last Interglacial commenced and its duration remain highly controversial, and we know very little about which parts of the globe first experienced interglacial conditions. Was there a YD-type event during Termination II? How does MIS 5e compare with the Holocene in terms of climatic stability?
This session seeks to attract oral papers and posters presenting new research results from the full range of marine and terrestrial archives, with a particular emphasis on: the timing and structure of Termination II; climate forcing and inter-hemispheric synchroneity; the duration and environmental conditions associated with the Last Interglacial optimum in different parts of the globe (especially from the much under-represented Southern Hemisphere); and the timing of the Last Glacial inception. We are especially keen to attract teams utilising multiple archives, as well as palaeoclimate modellers concerned with forcing mechanisms.
The final submission date for abstracts is 31 January 2007. Further information can be found at
