Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to submit abstracts for the following session at the XVII
INQUA Congress (Cairns, Australia, 28 July - 3 August 2007).

Spatial and temporal variability of radiocarbon marine reservoir ages over
the past 50 kyr

Convenors: Quan Hua (Australia), Helen McGregor (Australia), John Southon
(USA) and Warren Beck (USA).

It has been long assumed that, for a particular region, radiocarbon marine
reservoir age (R) does not significantly change with time. This allows us to
use a constant R for the calibration of radiocarbon dates of marine samples.
However, recent studies show significant temporal variations in R in some
parts of the world's oceans during the Holocene and the Younger Dryas. The
spatial and temporal variability in Radiocarbon marine reservoir ages also
becomes important as the need for the integration of climatic signals from
terrestrial and oceanic proxies for a better understanding of global climate
change increases. In addition, variations in Radiocarbon marine reservoir
ages give useful information on changes in ocean circulation in the past,
and consequently past climate change.

This session facilitates discussions on the spatial and temporal variability
of Radiocarbon marine reservoir ages over the radiocarbon time scale from
modern to the Holocene, LGM, MIS-2 and MIS-3 (the past 50 kyr).
Presentations of local/regional Radiocarbon reservoir ages and their changes
as found in various environments (open ocean, estuaries and middens), using
a variety of techniques (14C ages of pre-bomb known-age marine samples,
paired marine/terrestrial samples, paired 230Th/14C corals, etc.), are of
particular interest. Modelling studies of ocean circulation and its relation
to changes in Radiocarbon marine reservoir ages at regional and/or global
scales are also encouraged.

Deadline for submission is 31st January 2007. Abstracts can now be submitted
through: http://www.inqua2007.net.au/ <http://www.inqua2007.net.au/>

We are looking forward to receiving your abstracts.
