Does anyone have any radiocarbon ages from river & floodplain environments which they would be willing to share and contribute to a Holocene fluvial database for New Zealand?
If so, please read on...

Prof Mark Macklin (Centre for Catchment & Coastal Research, Aberystwyth University, UK) and Dr. Ian Fuller (Geography Programme, Massey University) are compiling a Holocene fluvial database for NZ using a methodology developed by Macklin & colleagues originally facilitated through an ISCU research project and more recently supported by INQUA through their Hydrology & Global Change Focus Area Committee. A special issue of Catena (2006, volume 66, issues 1-2) edited by Gregory, Macklin & Walling summarises both the methodology and results of a number of European case studies. An essential part of this analysis is the classification of radiocarbon dates collected from a riverine context on the basis of depositional environment. Stratigraphic information and sedimentary logs of radiocarbon sample locations are essential, particularly to identify radiocarbon dates that mark major changes in sedimentation style & flooding regime. Probability distributions of these dates can then be compared with climate and land-cover change records to evaluate hydrological controls.
All contributors supplying radiocarbon dates will be fully acknowledged & cited in any publications that arise from this project.
