Dear Prof. Williams,
I am sending you the very sad news that Professor Liu Tungsheng died at
11:22 am today (6 March 2008) in Beijing. His family was with him at his
bed in hospital and it was a very peaceful passing.

In September, 2006, Professor Liu was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
During the last one and half years, he was mostly confined in hospital
receiving chemotherapy. Initially he was coping with the treatment quite
well. But from last August, he had been affected by fever several times and
his immunity had been weakened by the development of anorexia. Two days
ago, he was affected by pneumonia with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and his
condition deteriorated quickly in spite of all the effort made by the
doctors. During his brave battle against the lymphoma, he had been
extremely optimistic and kept close contact with his colleagues and friends
at home and abroad.

Please forward this message to whoever you feel would like to know. His
wife, daughter and son can be reached at lily_liu1015 at yahoo.com

Yours sincerely,
