The Faculty of Arts at the University of Adelaide welcomes applications for a higher degree (Ph.D.) scholarship focussed on "Environmental change in sub-tropical Australia: new insights into climate and the impact of humans" in conjunction with an ARC Discovery Project in Geography, Environment and Population, which is funded for the period 2015-2017.

The nature of environmental change leading up to, and following, human arrival in Australia is a strongly debated issue in Australian geosciences. In part, this arises due to a paucity of information. We seek a Ph.D. student to help resolve these debates.

We have recently identified a wetland on North Stradbroke Island ("Straddie"), south-east Queensland, which has continuous sediments dating to at least 100,000 years ago. The presence of sand grains in the sediment provides an unprecedented opportunity to obtain a robust chronology of environmental change through Marine Isotope Stages 3 and 4 via OSL dating.

This successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop various records of environmental change and to address key questions such as the nature of environmental variability and change before and after human arrival, and the impacts, and major drivers, of climate change during critical time periods.

We are seeking students with interests and/or experience in areas such as:

1. Geochronology (OSL)

2. Pollen analysis

3. Organic geochemistry

4. Fire history

The student would be based at The University of Adelaide and have an opportunity to work with the following project investigators: Dr John Tibby (co-ordinator: Adelaide), Assoc. Prof. Patrick Moss (pollen: Queensland), Prof. Melanie Leng (isotopes: Nottingham, UK), Dr Jeremy Shakun (data-model comparison: Boston) and Assoc. Prof. Nigel Spooner (OSL dating: Adelaide). At Adelaide there have been a number of recent appointments of researchers in this field including Dr Cameron Barr (diatoms), Dr Lee Arnold (Future Fellow: OSL), Dr Cesca McInerney (Future Fellow: organic geochemistry) and Dr Jonathan Tyler (isotope geochemistry). Adelaide was recently voted one of the most liveable cities in the world and has a cost of living lower than any mainland capital.

Please contact John Tibby (john.tibby at adelaide.edu.au<mailto:john.tibby at adelaide.edu.au>) for more information.

Closing date: 15th March

Eligibility: applicants will have a minimum of Honours 2A result or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Australia at the time of application.

Stipend: $25,392 per annum (2014 rate), indexed annually. It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.
