About ANSTO

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is home to Australia's nuclear science and technical expertise. More than 1000 scientists, engineers and experts work at ANSTO and use nuclear science and technology to answer the big questions in the world around us - improving health outcomes, increasing our understanding of the environment and climate change and identifying new opportunities for Australian industry.

We operate much of our country's landmark science facilities including one of the world's most modern nuclear research reactors (OPAL). Importantly, ANSTO is helping to improve our health with one in two Australians benefitting from the nuclear medicines produced using the OPAL research reactor while being treated for serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

About the position
The Senior Stable Isotope Analyst is responsible for providing analytical expertise to research and commercial projects that use environmental stable isotope measurements.

In a team of two, you will be required to manage and operate three Isotope Radio Mass Spectrometers (IRMS) and their associated preparation devices, and a Cavity Ring-Down Spectrometer, in order to support environmental research that meets with ANSTO's strategic direction.

Reporting to the Project Leader or Laboratory Manager and working as part of the Isotopes for Water project, you will have strong leadership skills and responsibility for supervision of other analytical staff and researchers working in the laboratory.

*         Perform routine sample preparation and analysis and providing advice to clients on analyses;
*         Check and validate laboratory results, interpretation and evaluation of data and provision of results and technical reports;
*         Perform routine maintenance, calibration and quality checks to ensure ongoing quality of experimental results including liaison with suppliers and manufacturers regarding service, complex maintenance and trouble-shooting;

Skills and Experience
*         Degree in chemistry or closely related discipline;
*         Extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer;
*         Extensive experience with sampling, sample preparation and methods development for C, N, O and H isotopic analysis of liquid, solid, gas and biological materials;

"We strive to facilitate a friendly but dedicated team environment that produces world class isotope data. If you have a passion for high quality work, a flexible work ethic and good communication skills, this is the role for you"
Robert Chisari, Laboratory Manager
