Title: Towards understanding Indigenous food production, landscape management & environmental legacies in Australia

Abstract: Recent public debate has highlighted both the significance of understanding the complexity of Australian Aboriginal subsistence practices, and a disconnect between academic and public understandings of this topic. This talk discusses some of the theoretical and methodological difficulties of investigating past food production and landscape management practices in Australia, and highlights old and new research that is providing much needed archaeological and palaeoenvironmental data. Multi-disciplinary projects, embedded in Traditional Ecological Knowledge are vital if we are to understand the environmental legacies of ~65,000 years of human management of Australian landscapes, a problem not only important for our understanding of the past, but also for our shaping of the future.

Look forward to seeing some of you there!
