Dear Quaternarists,
Have you ever trekked all the way out to a field site, only to realise you're missing a small, obscure, yet absolutely critical piece of equipment? Have you ever spent hours trying to find monitoring equipment placed the year before that you could have sworn you knew the exact location of? Had a piece of code that after months, still didn't quite do what you wanted it to?
Trial and error and setbacks are a regular part of our work, yet our research output typically only celebrates and acknowledges our successes. I am looking to compile a series of short stories for the next QA issue of the times when things don't go to plan - whether that be in the lab, in the field, or anywhere else that you work! Perhaps you have a short and (in hindsight) funny story, or have been in a more challenging situation. What did you learn from the experience? Who helped you move forward?
As an ECR, I find it both helpful and reassuring to be reminded that this is all part of the job, and I think that sometimes, these situations can be our best learning opportunities. All contributions welcome, please get in touch by emailing me at r.rudd at uq.edu.au<mailto:r.rudd at uq.edu.au>. If something still feels a bit too fresh and you aren't quite ready to own up to it publicly, anonymous submissions are also welcome!
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Rachel
