Dear all,
Please see below email by ANZIC (Ron Hackney) that might be of interest to some.
ICDP provides some great opportunities to fund terrestrial scientific drilling programs, as most of you are certainly aware. There are intentions by ANZIC to become an ICDP member, and it would be great to highlight a broad interested in the community to this endeavour. I should probably add - ICDP does provide logistic support and funding for large, international scientific drilling programs, but it does not necessarily mean “hundreds of meters of deep drilling” - as long as there is a significant logistic and operational challenge (that requires international engagements).
Check out the ICDP website<https://www.icdp-online.org>, specifically “Projects” —> “By theme” —> “Environmental Change” for past and ongoing ICDP projects of interest!
Cheers
Alex

Dear colleagues,
I’m reaching out to you all as people I know of that have links to or interest in the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP) – or scientific drilling in Australia more generally.
As part of a process in which ANZIC (Australia New Zealand IODP Consortium) is attempting to secure additional funding under NCRIS (through AuScope) for Australian ICDP membership, I wanted to raise two things with you:
1) An opportunity for someone from Australia to join the ICDP Science Advisory Group<https://www.icdp-online.org/about-icdp/sag> (SAG), the body that reviews ICDP proposals
2) An opportunity to promote Australian continental drilling projects or ideas at the upcoming ICDP Conference (21-23 July)
1) Science Advisory Group (SAG)
I recently learned that SAG members do not represent countries, meaning researchers from non-member countries can be on SAG. As we are actively trying to get the funds for Australian membership, I think now would be a good time to see if we can get Australian representation on SAG.
Key points
• The role needs well-qualified, internationally renowned experts who are effective communicators and willing to read and review a large number of proposals
• ICDP anticipates some vacancies on the SAG in the near future and they are particularly looking for expertise in paleoclimate, geothermal, mineralogy, impact structures, volcanology, tephrachronology or microbiology
If you are interested in volunteering, or know of someone suitable for the SAG, please get in touch ASAP – I will need to forward a CV and summary of key competencies to the ICDP office by the end of June.
2) ICDP Conference
I have accepted an invitation to attend the ICDP Conference in Potsdam from 21-23 July (this seems to be an invitation-only conference to mark 25 years of ICDP).
I have been given the opportunity to present a poster at the conference and would welcome material from you that summarises your projects and/or ideas for drilling in Australia. Perhaps something like a location map, a schematic diagram illustrating concept/objectives, and a few dot points – let’s say by 7 July.
If you are involved in projects outside Australia, please just let me know which ones and I will list them (I don’t think there’ll be enough space on the poster to include much on Australian involvement in international projects).
Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you know that has an interest in continental scientific drilling in Australia. And also don’t hesitate to get in touch if this is the first you’ve heard of some of the above...
Regards, Ron
