Talk #1:
Patrick Hesp
Strategic Professor of Coastal Studies  Beach and Dune Systems (BEADS) Lab, College of Science and Engineering
Flinders University

Title:
“Holocene to Recent Evolution and Morphodynamics of the Younghusband Peninsula”.

Abstract:
The Holocene evolution, stratigraphy and geomorphology of the Younghusband Peninsula will be reviewed. Recent research on the historical impacts of grazing and vegetation change, shoreline dynamics, and the evolution of new transgressive dunefields will also be discussed.

Biography:
Patrick Hesp was born in Hawera, NZ. He received his BA and MA in Geography at Massey University, NZ, his Ph.D in 1982 from The University of Sydney in Coastal Geomorphology, and his DSc from Massey University in 2013. He is currently the Strategic Professor of Coastal Studies and Head of Environmental Science at Flinders University. In 2020 he was ranked in the top 1% of scientists in the world, and in 2023 awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the International Society for Aeolian Research (ISAR). Patrick has published over 300 articles in his career to date and his primary research is focused on coastal dune evolution, geomorphology and dynamics, and surfzone-beach-dune interactions

Talk #2:
Roger Luebbers
Principal: Luebbers & Associates Heritage Consultants, Melbourne

Title:
“Post mid-Holocene indigenous occupation of the Younghusband Peninsula from the perspective of archaeological data”.

Abstract:
The post mid-Holocene indigenous occupation of the Younghusband Peninsula and its corollaries with freshwater swamps will be reviewed from the perspective of archaeological survey data, unpublished descriptions from ethnohistorical sources, ecological modeling, and other eyewitness accounts pertaining to wetland behaviour from the South East more widely.

Biography:
Roger Luebbers was born in California USA during the early years of World War II. He received an BA at the University of Missouri in 1969 after completing a stint in Africa with the US Peace Corps. He gained his PhD in Prehistory from the Australian National University in 1979. Since 1982 he has been engaged in cultural heritage assessment and conservation programs in state government agencies, local government and private developers until 2021. Roger has written a large range of assessment reports pertaining to colonial historic and Indigenous heritage, including Chinese occupation in the Coorong. His primary focus in most analysis is land use reconstructions in coastal and wetland landscapes.
