Subject: Earth sciences seminar 15th of August, Dr Derrick Hasterok
Hi everyone,
This week we have a more casual seminar delivered by Dr. Derrick Hasterok on the use and misuse of AI in research and other escapades. Derrick's talk is titled "AI as Your Research Assistant: Smarter Workflows, Better Results" and may have been generated through ChatGPT....... See attached flyer for brief biography and abstract. This seminar will be recorded and zoomed as per usual (details at the end of the email).
Also, in two weeks we will not have our usually Friday seminar, instead that week there is a Granites Symposium we are hosting instead. The symposium is on Tuesday the 26th of August and will be held in the Benham Lecture Theatre from ~1500. We will be heading for dinner afterwards, so please let me know if you would like to attend that. For our wider mailing list, the symposium will be zoomed (and possibly recorded?), the intention is that the zoom link will be the same, but I will send out details late next week. I have copied the tentative outline below:
3:00 - 3:20 - Welcome drinks and nibbles
3:20-3:25 - Justin Payne - Welcome to Symposium and Introductions (inc. Acknowledgement of Country and sponsors)
3:25 - 3:55 - Professor Josh Schwartz (California State University, Northridge) - Mafic Recharge in the Root of a Continental Arc
4:00 - 4:30 - Professor Jade Star Lackey (Pomona College, California)- Oxygen Isotope Tracing of Rapid Burial and Remelting of Upper Arc Rocks in Continental Batholiths: The Many Implications
4:30 - 4:40 - Break
4:40 - 5:10 - Professor Bill Collins (Adjunct, Curtin University of Technology) - Origin of Cordilleran batholiths: a partisan view
5:15 - 5:45 - Professor Rongfeng Ge (Nanjing University) - Magma oxygen fugacity and water content of Archean TTGs: implications for petrogenesis and tectonic setting
5:45 - 6:00 - Questions - Informal panel with speakers
6:30 - Dinner at a local restaurant
Thanks!
Andrew
