Broinowski, entitled 'Asian Representations of Australia: Some New
Things'

At the Asian Studies Annex on Thursday 29 October 12-1.00 pm.


ASIAN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUSTRALIA: SOME NEW THINGS


Alison Broinowski has just submitted her PhD thesis on the way opinion
leaders in ten Asian countries perceive Australia. She is selecting
some of her findings for discussion and feedback at this seminar. They
include:

  a.. Occidentalising Australia as a reversal of Orientalism
  b.. Cultural mapping of Asian countries and Australia
  c.. What were the Chinese protesting in 1888?
  d.. Japanese plans for Australia as part of Asia
  e.. Predictions of the coming revenge against Australia
  f.. Indian projections of caste and colour
  g.. Writing back the discourse of colonialism in Southeast Asia
  h.. Moral panics in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia
  i.. Indigenous and less indigenous
  j.. About 'face'
