In association with PricewaterhouseCoopers

Presents

Al Qaeda Terrorism and Western Strategy

Dr Paul Monk
Senior Fellow, Australian Thinking Skills Institute

Monday 26 November
6.30pm sharp

At the Pavillion Room, Darling Park, (off the Star Court Garden) 201
Sussex St Sydney

Paul Monk was an Asia defence intelligence analyst for the Australian
government from 1990 to 1995. He is currently Senior Fellow of the
Australian Thinking Skills Institute and runs seminars on critical
thinking, security issues in contemporary Asia, and argument mapping
for military officers.

The attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon impelled the
United States and its allies to form a coalition for a war on
terrorism, starting with a war on the Taliban regime in Afganistan.
It is prudent to assume, however, that the jihad coalition
deliberately sought to provoke such a massive American response, which
would enable them to spark upheaval all over the Islamic world and
topple pro-Western regimes from North Africa to Indonesia.

Arms alone, therefore, will not get to the root of this problem. What
is needed is a plan of action for a 21st century world order which
will remove the deeper causes of such violence.

This seminar will provide a guide for critical understanding of the
catastrophic events of 11 September and the continuing military
response.

Light refreshments will be served following the seminar.
