JAPAN FELLOW PRESENTATION
Dr Gary Hickey 'Melodrama in Meiji Japan'
Recently, scholars of the Japanese print have been examining woodblock-printed frontispieces (kuchi-e) produced for novels and literary magazines of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Though these prints were produced as illustrations for emerging genres of Japanese literary fiction, many were printed to a high standard and had artistic merit. They reflected changing trends in Japanese woodblock-printed imagery and in the art world.
In 2011 a collection of over 230 kuchi-e dating from the late 1890s to the 1920s was donated to the Library. This Clough collection comprises works by over twenty artists across a range of subjects and offers a representative sampling of the entire woodblock-printed kuchi-e tradition.
Dr Gary Hickey is a curator and scholar of Japanese art. He is a research fellow at the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland and is on the directorial board of the Tokyo-based International Ukiyo-e Society. He is the National Library's current Japan Fellow.
