PUBLIC LECTURE
Body, Consciousness, Medicine, and the Psychosomatic in Yogācāra Buddhism
Prsenter: Dan Lusthaus (Harvard University)
Professor Lusthaus will discuss the first two levels (bhūmi:
the five bodily senses and the mental sphere) of the Indian philosopher Asaṅga’s
foundational text Stages of Yogic Practice (Yogācārabhūmi), focusing on the
psychosomatic transition between the physical to the mental and its use of
contemporary Indian medical theories of that day to explain it, which is
comparable to the current use of neurobiological sciences to explain
meditation, etc. Underlying themes of this section of the Stages of Yogic Practice
are the causes of cognitive experience, causes of life, sickness and death, and
the relation of consciousness to the physical body.
