** What is The Living Memory Project?
The Living Memory video archive project, directed by well known human
rights activist, journalist and author, Jill Jolliffe, records the
testimony of former political prisoners, whose stories provide evidence
of the still-unexamined human rights violations to which the East
Timorese were subject in their quest for independence. The video archive
will be used by the ex-prisoners' association ASEPPOL to educate a
younger generation and urge respect for human rights. It will also form
part of the on-line Southeast Asia Digital Library (see
http://www.cormosea.org/grant.htm ).
The Living Memory Project also hopes to use the interviews to build a
database on the effect of imprisonment on the long-term health of
ex-prisoners. This talk will feature an exhibition of photos, stories
and video testimonies from the Living Memory project, highlighting the
variety of interviewees: a female guerilla fighter, parent and child
internees, singers, students, politicians, and women subjected to sexual
slavery.
This talk is part of a series of talks presented by the Australia
Library and Information Association's Asia Pacific Special Interest
Group. Come along and here about this important and inspiring work - all
welcome!
