The suffering diplomat: imagining worldly-wise leadership in Timor Leste
Date: Thursday 27 March 2008 , 11.00pm - 12.30pm
Venue: Seminar Room B, Coombs Building, ANU
Abstract: This seminar will examine the presidential campaign of Jose
Ramos-Horta which took place between March and May 2007. This discussion
will illustrate how international and educational knowledge has come to be
perceived locally as sources of potency in leadership representations. The
emphasis on 'international know-how' prevalent in local debates on power and
authority occurred during a time when international commentaries on Timor
Leste increasingly described the country as a failed state. The seminar
will therefore further discuss what impact international opinion has had on
local understandings of power and leadership.
