Dear all,
Judging from Lisualdo's reply, I would say that, what made Reid-Smith say that "Bahasa Indonesia is already one of the preferred languages of TL's Department of Foreign Affairs" is an example of loose thinking. The Australian example that she mentioned in the reply to Lisualdo relates to the fact that East and Southeast Asian languages are now taught at schools, not that they have become the official languages of Australia! English remains supreme!
What the Indonesian lobbyists are excited about is the intervirew with the President in Paris in which he is alleged to have said that Bahasa Indonesia would become an official language of TL, in August, instead of Portuguese. For once, I don't think that the Timorese governments, past or present, were against Bahasa Indonesia or any other Southeast and East Asian language, including English, being taught at schools in TL.
Best wishes,
Estevao
