[TimorLesteStudies] Sarjana Supermie?

Hi Florentino,
I followed the elections in 2001 very closely (I worked as a translator for ABC Australia) when this statement was supposed to have been made. I never saw any record of it. Maybe Dr. Alkatiri said it in private? I don't know. The claims were only based on what someone said or heard. Furthermore, local newspapers are not the most reliable of all sources and on a number of occasions, they (the local newspapers) misquoted or misrepresented (in their editorials) their subjects. Even then, I saw no mention of it.
But something really needs to be said about this issue of "who said what". Folks, what Dr. Alkatiri said or didn't say is not relevant, although it is certain that Dr. Alkatiri's critics and political opponents attribute this statement to him in order to discredit him ad hominem. I don't think this is a healthy way to conduct politics in TL given its nascent democracy. However, I won't say that Dr. Alkatiri or anyone for that matter, specially our political and religious leaders, and other community leaders, are saints who only have nice things to think of, or say about anyone or any group. But they are entitled to their opinion and at the day, the most important thing is that people should be judged first and foremost by what they do not by what they think or say. There are many examples of people who only have nice things to say but act the total opposite to what they preach.
Cheers,
Alex.

Perhaps, Timor Post or STL would be able to provide some details on this matter; however, I am a bit doubt if they have good archive (filing system) in place. The year when the statement was made probably around 2003-2004, I might be wrong - could be earlier than that!
