2014 Pacific Research Colloquium - Developing Pacific ScholarshipJanuary 28 to February 7, 2014Australian National University, Canberra

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The State Society and Governance in Melanesia Program is offering twelve scholarship awards to graduate students, scholars and researchers from universities, research institutions, NGOs and other professional bodies in the Pacific Islands and Timor Leste, to participate in the 2014 Pacific Research Colloquium.

Payment of full travel costs to and from Canberra, plus accommodation and living expenses, will be provided to successful applicants from the Pacific and Timor Leste. The Colloquium provides an opportunity for younger Pacific social science (anthropology, development studies, political science or public administration, gender studies, geography, sociology, Pacific Studies or public health) researchers to develop research capacity with some of the top Pacific scholars in Australia.

The program includes:

· Intensive training about designing, conducting and writing reports on research projects

· ANU scholars providing mentoring and feedback on participant research projects and papers

· Guided introductions to research resources at the ANU

· Participant presentations on their research

· Parliament & Embassy visits

· Social events

The Colloquium has undergone significant changes to both its design and content over the last few years. To further integrate the Colloquium within SSGM’s other flagship activities, up to two four week visiting fellowships will be awarded to the most outstanding papers presented during the Colloquium. These fellowships will culminate in a further presentation at the annual State of the Pacific Conference in June 2014, with an open invitation to publish the final papers in an edited book based on the conference proceedings or in the SSGM Discussion Paper Series.

This new initiative is part of SSGM’s broader commitment to building Pacific research capacity by publishing outstanding work by Pacific scholars. Colloquium participants who do not win one of the three fellowships will still receive ongoing mentoring as they develop their research projects and write their papers. Opportunities to publish as an SSGM Discussion Paper will also be available.

Application Deadline: 5pm Friday 6 September

Successful applicants will be notified by 27 September and will be required to submit a full draft paper by 8 November. Award of the Scholarship will be dependent on receipt of draft research paper.
