Course Description
Starting in the second semester, the School of Language Studies will
offer an online Portuguese language course. The course will be
delivered through Indiana University and coordinated locally, with
the help of a native Portuguese-speaking tutor.
The Portuguese Language Course will be an elective for all ANU
students, and will also be open to the wider Canberra community.
Due to the support of the Embassy of Brazil, the students will have
the opportunity to take part in seminars, conferences, and short
extension courses with a Brazilian academic on topics related to
Brazilian culture, society, and history.
The course is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language,
with an emphasis on Portuguese as spoken in Brazil. Students will
develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, reaching an
advanced beginners level by the end of the second semester, based
on a communicative and culture-based approach in a simulated
immersion situation. Throughout the year, students will develop a
knowledge and understanding of Brazilian culture as well as that of
other Portuguese-speaking countries around the world.
Program Code PORT1001 to be taught in semester 2/2013
PORT1002 to be taught in semester 1/2014
Prerequisites
None for PORT1001;
the equivalent knowledge of PORT1001 for PORT1002.
