Call for Papers: Timor-Leste Studies Initiative @ Association for Asian Studies Online Workshop, [12th March 2022]
We are pleased to announce the 5th Pre-Conference Virtual Workshop of the Timor-Leste Studies Initiative @ the Association for Asian Studies on March 12th, 2022. The project has several aims including the promotion of Timor-Leste Studies in the Americas, the development of teaching materials and distance language learning (i.e. Tetum), and the support for archival projects on Timor-Leste and East Timorese scholars. The workshop will be held online. The papers will be accessible for the other participants to read and comment on 1st of March. Each participant is asked to specifically comment on two papers.
On 12th of March, we will have a roundtable via Zoom which includes discussants’ comments, open discussions, and a session to brainstorm future directions in Timor-Leste Studies.
Through our virtual workshop, we would like to highlight innovative research and teaching materials that pay serious academic attention to Timor-Leste. Particularly, we will encourage applications that explore Timorese perspectives on global issues (e.g. human-rights, democratization, decolonization, the Cold War, and environmental problems), Timorese political and religious thought (e.g. community formation, gender, and self-determination), Timorese language sources and fieldwork, and problems and theories based on Timor’s local reality.
We will especially welcome:

- Research in the humanities that engage/challenge conventional views and narratives, or explore new themes, methodologies, and sources.

- Social science research concerning Timorese societies, culture, economy, politics and international relations.

- Interdisciplinary research (including the humanities and both natural and social sciences) that explore new fields of inquiries.

- Critical area studies, cultural studies, post-colonial studies and comparative studies that engage with Timorese texts or cases.

- State of the field papers that analyse knowledge production about Timor-Leste in various locations and languages (e.g. in Tetum, Portuguese, North & South American, Southeast Asian, Japanese, Australian).

All participants’ papers will be considered for publication we are planning to compile after the workshop.
