Hello ETAN Friends

I wanted to let you know about some reports that the Monash team and our co-authors have produced this year, that might interest you. All these can be found on the Reports & Publications tab at monashintimor.org<http://monashintimor.org>.

A report on Youth Bulge and employment prospects for young people (in English and Tetun) will be released in a few weeks - will update you when that is uploaded. And a series of blogs on agricultural policy is on the way ...

Stay well

Modernising Agriculture: Timor-Leste's Most Important Economic Sector (English and Tetun)
This report is proposing a fresh approach to modernising the agriculture sector in Timor-Leste. Many countries have benefited from a “Green Revolution” over the past 60 years, where significant gains in food production have led to declining poverty and improved livelihoods. It is time for Timor-Leste to embark on this journey, as the driver of broader economic development that will benefit the whole population.

Numeracy Testing of Grade & 9 Students in Timor-Leste (English & Tetun)

This report presents the results of a standardised numeracy test for Grade 8 and 9 students in Timor-Leste that took place in late 2019. We also explore why standardised testing is valuable in assessing the progress of an education system.

Labour Productivity in Timor-Leste Businesses 2010-2018
This report analyses trends in labour productivity in formal businesses. The results highlight the importance of investing in human capital, providing a supportive business enabling environment, and focusing on key sectors with greater employment potential.

Forestry in Timor-Leste: Trees are our Future?
The report shows the Forestry industry has great potential in Timor-Leste, with capacity to add up to $200 million per year to GDP, or $150 per person per year. But it will take a clear plan and significant up-front investment of public money. There is a lot of potential for use of income from selling carbon credits to provide farmers with the economic incentive to invest.
