Everything and Nothing
The Life and Development Work of Bill Armstrong
by Peter Britton
Launched last week by Friends of Suai/Covalima (https://aeta.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b010042582a645e88aba35055&id=b7e0b7d5b0&e=c74ac3b035) and AVI.
"Done right the critical work you do looks like nothing..."
The book gives an invaluable insight into the evolution of Bill Armstrong's philosophy on international and community developmentand and the pivotal role his family, YCW (Young Christian Movement) and Belgian priest Joseph Cardijn played. This led to an extraordinary career as a leader of organisations such as YCW, the Overseas Service Bureau, Australian Volunteers International, Action for World Development, AUSTCARE (Australians Care for Refugees), ActionAid Australia, Australian Council for Overseas Aid and others. A chapter is devoted to his role in the Timor-Leste independence campaign. His 20 year involvelemt with Indigenous Community Volunteers, now Community First Development, resulted in the creation of the Bill Armstrong Human Rights award, a clear statement of respect for Bill and his approach to community development. In October 2016 Bill stepped down as chair of Friends of Suai/Covalima, an organisation with a track record of more than 20 years which has showcased a partnership
model where local government and the community work together. Reflecting upon this, he says "So, at the end of my international career, Friends of Suai gave me a chance to see that what I believed and what I was taught way back at the beginning, worked. So, that's why Friends of Suai is so important to me."
Peter Britton's book, portraying the life of a remarkable man, is an inspiration to anyone interested in development, be it community, international or, indeed, personal.
