Postdoctoral Fellow

Experimental philosophy and the origins of Empiricism

(Fixed-term, Full-time or Part-time)

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship based in the  
Department of Philosophy at the University of Otago. This appointment  
can be held either full-time for 18 months, or as a fractional  
appointment (0.8 FTE) for two years. This will be negotiated, as  
appropriate, with the successful candidate, who should be able to  
assume responsibilities on 1 March 2009.

The successful candidate will join a research team led by Professor  
Peter Anstey (Philosophy, Otago) and Dr Richard Serjeantson (Trinity  
College, Cambridge). The project is funded by the Royal Society of New  
Zealand’s Marsden Fund.

Applicants should be fluent in German, have a PhD in a relevant  
discipline (such as philosophy, history and philosophy of science, or  
German), and demonstrated research excellence in a relevant area of  
early modern studies. Expertise in 18th to mid-19th century German  
philosophy will be particularly valuable. Possible additional areas of  
expertise could include, but are not limited to: Kant and Kantianism;  
early modern natural philosophy; eigtheenth-century British moral  
philosophy. Experience working in a research team is desirable. The  
postdoctoral fellow will work with the team on the joint project and  
also undertake independent research. The fellow will make a  
substantial independent contribution to a jointly-authored book and  
will participate in the activities of the Department of Philosophy.
