Hi all,
Sorry if you’ve received this elsewhere. We are seeking your input into a new survey of Aus polsci candidates and supervisors.
As was highlighted in the recent State of Social Sciences report<https://stateofthesocialsciences.org.au/full-report/> “[s]takeholders spoke loud and clear about their discontents with career prospects in academia.” This concern is prevalent throughout the social sciences, including political science. In response to this, three PhD students at ANU and the University of Adelaide (Daniel Casey, Serrin Rutledge-Prior and Nick Falcinella) have started a study to better understand students’ perspectives on their PhD programmes and career prospects, and compare those to the perspectives of academics. This should help the discipline improve PhD training and career prospects.
This survey will build on previous research on Australian political science PhD students in 2013<https://doi.org/doi:10.1080/10361146.2013.840431>, Canadian political science PhD supervisors in 2020<https://doi.org/doi:10.1017/S1049096520000839>, and the 2017 APSA Survey<https://auspsa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/australian_political_studies_association_survey_report_2017.pdf>, in order to enable comparisons across time, and across countries. The survey will seek to address the following broad areas:
· Methods training/coursework as part of a PhD programme;
· Teaching/tutoring during a PhD programme;
· Publication expectations of PhD candidates;
· Supervisory arrangements/mentoring/sponsorship of PhD candidates;
· Career outcomes/objectives/expectations of PhD candidates;
· COVID-specific questions; and
· Equity issues.
The survey is open now, and all current political science PhD students and academics who have supervised PhD students are invited to participate. The survey link is here: https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dbz1cYuTRysXX7g?fbclid=IwAR2t82tGYZKP7CUwC1471pq67sKGl5gexBz41lEDwS8lDq7D9xvFjiqDV2c
