One can certainly imagine a few salient points of degradation of society:

(*) lifespans in the west begin to drop as we eat our way into oblivion,
    both through quantity of food consumed and sad quality of processed junk;
    heart disease and cancer become rampant killers of a sedate robot class;
    see "Fast Food Nation" (http://www.mcspotlight.org/media/books/schlosser.html)

(*) as global warming marches on, 100's of millions will become eco-refugees;
    see "An Unconvenient Truth" by Al Gore (http://imdb.com/title/tt0497116/)

(*) depression and mental disorders begin to rank as the number one afflications
    in a disaffected and disconnected society

(*) health care and education services continue their decline in the west which
    kills both human beings and scientific innovation

(*) with little to stop them, mega multinational corporations and their governments-
    in-waiting accelerate their transfer of wealth and health from the lower
    classes to the rich,

I could go on and on, but this isn't a Pessimism 101 class.

cheers
