Bell Labs for many decades (longer?) not only paid for itself, but made
money [don't have references]
They made a motza licensing just the transistor...
There's a simple proof by existence...
The Bell Phone company kept them around because they got value out
of them.
The value wasn't just monetary, but eventually places that lose
money will be disbanded...
