People who have moved on from physics, and I've met a few, seem to
have a pretty tight grip on reality. We tend to be skeptical and need
good evidence before we will accept suggested causes for things.
It wasn't just nuclear which had physicists riding high but the
whole series of technologies which sprang from the war and also
methodologies such as operations research. You end up with a mind set
which lets you grossly simplify a complex phenomena, make a
mathematical model of it and use that to make behavioral predictions
that you can be reasonably comfortable with as you can also predict
the degree of error.
