About half the EFTPOS units in Canberra have a slot for smart cards.
This may be on the top, side or bottom of the reader, usually
indicated by the symbol of a credit card shaped rectangle with a
small square in the top left corner.

If you want to experiment with smart cards (not with the one the bank
issued you of course), Jaycar sell readers, programmers and blank
cards, starting at $8.75: <http://www.jaycar.com.au/>.
