1988 sounds a bit early.  I'm getting a vague recollection of late 1989 for 
com.au.

net.au names were probably active earlier than com.au names.  And I know 
edu.au was active in the old hosts file.

You know, if I can get one of these old 250MB tape drives running I can 
probably recover some data from that era of history.
