a succession of governments fulfilling their "obligations" to the
car, road-construction, and oil industries by running down the public
transport system.

govt owned public transport utilities don't make campaign donations.
private companies do.

same is true of the coal industry....which is why there wont be any
real action on climate change. instead there'll be a greenwash campaign
with an emphasis on bullshit like carbon sequestration (which has the dual
benefit of giving hundreds of million dollars of taxpayer money to the coal
industry AND effectively doing nothing for at least the next 15 or 20).

i also expect to see lots of political advertisements encouraging
residential users to install compact-fluoro light globes....which isn't
a bad thing in itself, the problem is that (like the residential water
savings propaganda) it is a deliberate distraction from the real source
of the problem (coal power and pointless industries like aluminium
smelting in the case of climate change, and industrial and especially
agricultural wastage in the case of water).

craig

ps: and this is the case for both the major parties. for all that
beasley is looking a lot greener than howard, i bet that he's giving
private reassurances to the coal industry that he doesn't intend to do
anything significant - he couldn't withstand the fear and smear campaign
they could muster against him any more than howard could.
