Well, I *tried* to find something behind the hype, viz.:
-   Content Syndication
-   Advertising Syndication
-   Storage Syndication
-   an 'Architecture of Participation'

Interestingly, several off-list commentators have argued that the 
for-profits are doing the not-for-profits a big favour.  They'll 
mostly go broke, and the real benefits will accrue to the open 
content fraternity, in the form of lots of ideas, advertising-funded 
gratis services some of which will last a long time, and moderate 
amounts of open source software.

But, given the inevitable attrition-rate, you'd want to be pretty 
wary about depending on any of them as your sole-source of storage 
and indexing.
